Industrial Uses of Barium Carbonate: A Complete Guide

Barium carbonate (BaCO₃) is one of the most widely used barium compounds in industry. Its stability, purity and reactivity make it valuable across a surprising range of manufacturing processes.

Ceramics & Glazes

In the ceramics industry, barium carbonate acts as a flux and a matting agent, controlling the melting behaviour of glazes and neutralising soluble salts that would otherwise cause scumming on fired bodies.

Glass Manufacturing

It increases the refractive index and brilliance of glass, and is used in the production of optical glass and specialty glassware.

Bricks & Tiles

Added to clay, barium carbonate precipitates soluble sulphate salts, preventing the white efflorescence that mars finished bricks and tiles.

Other Applications

It also serves as a raw material for other barium salts, in the manufacture of specialty chemicals, and in certain electronic ceramics. When sourcing barium carbonate, consistent particle size and low heavy-metal content are the specifications that matter most.
